The pancreas is made up of two different kinds of glands; the exocrine glands that produce pancreatic secretions that break down the fats and proteins in foods; and the endocrine cells that form clusters and produce hormones such as insulin that help balance sugar levels in the blood.
Tumors can occur in both exocrine and endocrine cells of the pancreas, however tumors formed by the exocrine cells are most common. Nearly all of these tumors are adenocarcinomas, which is a cancer that starts in gland cells.
Endocrine Tumors are much less common. Most of these are not cancer, but there are a few that are.
