A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ bulges through a weak area of muscle. Most hernias occur in the abdomen. Frequently, a hernia causes no apparent symptoms and may not seem serious. Although a hernia is not usually dangerous, it may lead to a life threatening condition if the blood supply to an organ is cut off. Surgical repair is usually recommended to treat abdominal hernias. Many hernia surgeries can now safely be done with small incisions and minimal blood loss and pain.
