Weight loss procedures that alter digestion were developed to work in conjunction with restrictive approaches. Malabsorptive procedures involve a bypass of the small intestine, which limits the absorption of calories. The malabsorptive procedure combined with a restrictive procedure, results in an overall increase in the loss of excess weight. Your surgeon will recommend the procedure or combination of procedures that is appropriate for you.
A gastric bypass restricts the intake of food as well as the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs. The surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine. Having a smaller stomach pouch causes you to feel full sooner and eat less. Bypassing part of the small intestine reduces the number of calories the body can absorb.
