When you feel full, you are more likely to have a reduced sense of hunger. Restrictive weight loss surgery works by reducing the amount of food you can consume at one time. It does not interfere with the normal digestion of food.
Gastric banding is a restrictive weight loss procedure in which the surgeon creates a smaller upper stomach pouch. The pouch, with a capacity of approximately 1/2 cup, connects to the rest of the stomach through a small outlet. For patients who are willing and committed to following protocols including strict dietary guidelines during the recovery period, the reduced stomach capacity, along with behavioral changes, can result in consistent weight loss.
A sleeve gastrectomy procedure decreases the size of the stomach, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time. During the sleeve gastrectomy, a thin vertical sleeve of stomach is created using a stapling device. The rest of the stomach is removed. The sleeve is about the size of a banana. As a result, you'll feel fuller sooner and stay fuller longer. Sleeve gastrectomy allows for normal digestion and absorption.
